An Unexpected Venture Into AikiJujutsu
I have a lot of appreciation for the many martial art styles that exist. I decided to expand that by studying Daito-ryu AikiJujutsu, a form of martial arts developed in Japan over 900 years ago. While browsing the net I came across a posting for the class, which is held at the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center in Pacoima, California. The center is the largest local Japanese American organization in the San Fernando Valley. So I hit my my boy Meeedio and told him what was up and we both were down to start right away.
I didn’t really know what to expect. Much of my training has been in the Chinese Martial Arts because I believe it is such a sophisticated method of self defense and can be highly effective once you master the higher levels. It was fun being a part of the grappling club in my masters program and it made me really gained great skills and appreciation for grappling and ground fighting. However with traditional Daito-Ryu many of the movements are standing or kneeling, which a few being implemented on the ground.
Our instructor was great. It was interesting to see the the similarities in concepts between different styles, such as disrupting your opponents center, which also teaches you about your own center of balance. The first class was a combination of rolling maneuvers, grabs, throws, and starting the process of letting the movement sink in. This is a style that will take many years to master, which in the long run is most beneficial. In our culture today many people try to find the fastest way to what they want, which may not be the best way. I believe that through studying the traditional martial arts, we can keep to tradition and also evolve to a very high skill level because you are studying the movements in their raw form, which gave way to MMA.
Daito-ryu AikiJujutsu was a style that had been taught in secret for hundreds of years until the end of the the nineteenth century where it began to be taught to the general public. Aiki meaning is interpreted as “how to unbalance the opponent”. The goal of Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu is focused on peaceful disengagement of an attacker, and can lead to personal and spiritual cultivation. It is also nice to see that the style is well developed, with a headquarters and annual meetings in Japan.
Studying this traditional Japanese martial has given me an appreciation for Japanese culture, which I hope to learn more about and hope to travel to in the near future. There is no one supreme martial art because it really depends on the person, not the art. However, if the arts and the person are working together as one to create something so mind blowing, then that would be considered the most extravagant composition of when 2 things come together to make a perfect match.
